Passion, Purpose, and Surfing: The Journey of Starting My First Business

Embarking on the journey of starting a business can be intimidating, yet it’s filled with potential for personal growth and success. If you’re dreaming of stepping off the beaten path and venturing into the world of entrepreneurship, my experience might just light that spark within you.

The Spark That Ignited My Entrepreneurial Spirit

Fresh out of university, my husband and I dove headfirst into our first business venture. With zero experience, what we had was a shared dream and the drive to make it work. This business wasn’t just a financial gain for us; it was a venture filled with deep meaning and purpose.

Childhood Inspirations and Early Influences

I was always that curious, multi-passionate kid, questioning everything and anything. Growing up in a rather unconventional, hippie-like community center, I was immersed in values of unity, giving back, and volunteering. My dad’s charitable efforts in Kenya particularly shaped my outlook, teaching me the significance of social contribution and community building. However, like many, life took me on a more traditional path, leading me to a science teaching role in Hong Kong.

Leaping Into the Unknown

Despite a stable career in teaching, that entrepreneurial itch never quite left me. There was always this niggling thought about the endless possibilities beyond the conventional 9-to-5 life. Fuelled by our love for surfing, my husband and I pondered, what if we could introduce this passion to the Hong Kong community?

Confronting Challenges Head-On

Our business beginnings were humble and riddled with challenges. As recent university grads, we lacked both funding and experience. We started with a dilapidated beach shack, pouring sweat and dreams into its transformation. Juggling my full-time teaching job while nurturing this budding venture was a test of perseverance and commitment. Doubts and societal expectations were constant companions, questioning our deviation from the norm.

Building and Nurturing Our Dream

We thrived on taking action, setting small, realistic goals, and embracing the learning process. Bootstrapping our venture, we slowly but steadily built our business from the ground up.

Community: The Heart of Our Success

Our initial efforts slowly transformed into a thriving community-centric business. We hosted surf camps, collaborated with local schools, and engaged in community projects. The growth and success of our business were significantly fueled by the community we nurtured and the invaluable team members who brought diverse skills to the table. Systemizing our processes allowed us to strike a balance between working on our business and enjoying our lives.

Reflecting on the Journey

This entrepreneurial path taught me the value of alternative routes to success and the importance of aligning business with personal values. It’s about creating something that transcends profit, making a positive impact on people and the planet.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

If you’re contemplating starting your own business, remember that it’s okay not to have all the answers at the beginning. The key is to start, learn, and adapt. Embrace your entrepreneurial journey with an open heart and mind.
